From Floodwaters to a New Foundation to Our Journey Home

Picture
On December 26, 2023, the physical foundation of Trinity Episcopal Church was altered forever. In the quiet of the morning following Christmas, a massive city water main directly in front of our historic building ruptured. Within hours, hundreds of thousands of gallons of water rushed through the lower levels of the church, undermining the foundation, shifting the ground beneath us, and forcing the sudden closure of our beloved 1871 sanctuary. In an instant, Trinity became a church without walls, beginning an unexpected season of "holy displacement."

True to the resilient spirit of this parish, our ministry did not stop when our doors were forced shut. By February 2024, our neighbors at Christ Church United Church of Christ, graciously opened their doors to us, providing a warm and welcoming space where we could gather, pray, and maintain our common bond in worship. Over the course of 2024 and 2025, while we worshipped faithfully in temporary quarters, our leadership worked tirelessly behind the scenes—navigating complex insurance settlements, negotiating with city officials, and working with our architect to draft structural engineering plans to ensure our historic landmark would rise again, stronger than before.

Once the settlements were secured, the memory of rushing water was replaced by the active, hopeful sounds of plumbers, carpenters and electricians rebuilding our future.  Throughout 2025 and into the early months of 2026, the meticulous work of stabilizing, restoring, and renovating began. The vision for the building quickly grew beyond a simple repair job. Our congregation chose to use this challenge as a sacred invitation to reimagine our space, updating the infrastructure while intentionally installing a brand-new elevator and barrier-free pathways to ensure that our facility is fully accessible to every single person who steps through our doors.

Today, we are thrilled to share that the finish line is finally in sight. Structural and interior renovations are entering their final stages, and we are officially tracking toward a completion date later this year, when we will celebrate a magnificent, joyous homecoming. When we return, we will not just be re-entering a repaired historic church; we will be launching a modernized community center designed to be a vibrant hub for the arts, civic outreach, and radical hospitality in the heart of Bethlehem.

We owe an immense debt of gratitude to our parishioners who remained fiercely loyal during this long journey, and to all in the wider Lehigh Valley community who have steadfastly held us in their prayers. In addition, we are thankful to our general contractor, Alvin H. Butz Inc., who has guided us through the entire construction project with honesty and integrity.  As we prepare to return, we are now planning a festive calendar of opening events, we invite you to keep Trinity in your prayers and look forward to visiting and being part of our Reopening experience. Our pews are being restored, our doors are being widened, and later this year, our voices will once again be singing from our home building at 44 E. Market Street, Bethlehem, PA.
