Care for terminally ill patients in Swaziland,
southern Africa
![]()
An International Ecumenical
AIDS Project coordinated by the
Episcopal Diocese of
Bethlehem
Swaziland is a
small, independent country
(population - 950,000, geographical size of Connecticut) located in southern
Africa It ranks as one of the 4 countries with the highest
prevalence of HIV - AIDS in Africa.
Approximately
one third of the pregnant women in the country are
HIV
positive. In 2000, about 12,000 patients will have died from AIDS
complications- 33 each day! Estimated
number of AIDS orphans - >70,000.
While
support from beyond Swaziland has increased during the past year, many donors
have focused attention and resources on the larger countries of the region. Therefore
the overall support necessary to permit adequate response to the many aspects
of the AIDS epidemic in Swaziland is recognized to be quite inadequate.
The
most serious and most neglected consequences of the epidemic are:
a/ those
persons with AIDS who are terminally ill; and
b/ AIDS
orphans - the children of mothers and parents who have
already died from
consequences of HIV related infections.
