"OH BOY"
by Mary Billets, July 2001

Tray after tray was pushed along, filled with desired food items, as a young boy with his mother approached. "Are we going to eat, Mom? Are we going to eat?" he asked excitedly. As his mother nodded her head in agreement, he said fervently, "Oh, boy!"

His eyes shone. Christmas had come to the lad, five or six years old, on a hot summer day in the Soup Kitchen of Trinity Church. Food to him was a precious commodity. He did not require much; to have the pangs of hunger eased was to him a cause for celebration. He sat at table with his mother, eating neatly of his food.

The mother and the boy were not seen again. Perhaps, they were travelers.

That eloquent "Oh, boy!" was a phrase all-encompassing. Surely there are silent "Oh, boy!"'s from the needy as they gaze in thanksgiving at the food on their trays.
