The 'G' song
A reflection by Jill Long, June 2001

The day that Father John Coble preached, my daughter, Karen, and I sat close to the front. I usually sit in the middle and know 'my people'. MY PEOPLE are the ones that sit in the middle too. I know the 'other side' of the middle because I meet them going up to communion. I know who to expect in the rows in front. I'm pretty comfortable in my semi-controlled surroundings.

But this day is an 'up front' day. Karen and Father Coble have become close during his tenure and Karen has chosen the pew. Karen's 2 year old son, Douglas, is in the nursery, happy to be in the care of Michael Hauze. At the peace, Karen brings Douglas for communion. Usually a very active child, he is very attentive, quiet. Everything interests him.

The music starts and the hymn begins. O Spirit of Life, O Spirit of God. The wonderful voice of Father Mac (a front pew person) spiritually flows through me from behind. I am privileged to hear his voice. We sit down and Douglas is in my lap. He says "Chee-sus". He could have said cookie, more juice, Elmo, or 100 other words he knows. But, he heard someone say Jesus. I'd like to think that like me, he heard the music, he heard the voice of Father Mac, and felt secure and loved.

We sing to all the grand kids. They like some of the 'old' songs too...Sparrow In The Tree Top, McGinty was Dead and McCarty didn't know it, silly songs and Sunday School standards. Taking a drive with 3 year old Kaitlyn the other day, we were taking turns naming the songs and then singing. From the back seat she requests "Pop Pop, sing me the 'G' song". He says "I don't know the 'G' song, you'll have to sing it for me". And she sings "Jesus Loves Me This I Know, for the bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong. Yes Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so."

I think that Douglas felt the love of the 'G' in the 'G' song, except the words began "O Spirit of Life, O Spirit of God".
