Preemies – Hats and Booties

Use only Orlon-Acrylic Baby yarn.  These little garments must stand up to the rigors of frequent laundering.

HATS

Orlon Acrylic Baby Yarn; set of 4 double ended needles Size 5 (or use 2 needles and sew seam)

Cast on 76 sts; Divide between three needles.  K2, P2 for 4 inches.  K1, k2 together for 3 rows.  Gather up remaining sts.  Tie off.  Attach pompom to top.  Turn up cuff.

POMPOM

Wrap yarn around two fingers about 35 times.  Tie together rightly between fingers using 8” length of yarn.  Clip loops in middle to form pompom.  Use ends of “tying” yarn to sew to top of hat.

BOOTIES

Orlon Acrylic Baby Yarn; 2 needles, size 4; 2 markers, crochet hook, size 6 (or any fairly small size); large-eye tapestry needle.

Cast on 43 sts.  K 8 rows

Row 9:  K18; K2 together; put marker on needle; k3 sts; Put on 2nd marker; k2 together, K remaining 18 sts.

Row 10:  P17; P2 together; k3 sts between markers; p2 together, P remaining 17 sts.

Continue K or P 2sts together at each marker, and K the 3 sts. between markers on every row (garter stitch) until there are 12 sts. on each side of center panel.

Work 12 rows of P2, K2 rib. so you K2 on each side of center panel, which you still keep working in garter stitch.  (That is, K the center 3 stitches on every row).  Cast off and sew up back and side seams.

With crochet hook, make chain 18” long and tie off.  Sew in yarn ends.  Using large tapestry needle, thread chain around ankle (at bottom of ribbing), under to K2’s and over the P2’s, with ends at center front.

Do not worry about gauge on these garments.  The difference in gauge from one knitter to another will automatically give us garments of different sizes to accommodate babies of different sizes!!!!
